Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence that allows systems to learn from data, identify patterns, and make decisions.
It is used in your everyday life:
Social Media & Video Feeds
Example: The "For You" page on TikTok and the YouTube homepage.
How ML is Used: These platforms use ML to learn what you like. It watches every video you pause on, re-watch, like, or share. It then curates a personalized, endless feed designed to keep you watching.
Voice Assistants
Example: Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa.
How ML is Used: When you say "Hey Google, what's the weather?" the AI has to (1) understand human speech (speech recognition) and (2) figure out what you mean (natural language processing) to give you the right answer.
Video Games
Example: Smarter enemies and teammates (NPCs).
How ML is Used: Instead of just following a simple, predictable path, game AI learns from you. It figures out your favorite hiding spots and attack patterns, then changes its own strategy to flank you or call for backup, making the game more challenging.
Camera Apps & Filters
Example: Snapchat and Instagram filters, or "Portrait Mode" on a phone.
How ML is Used: The AI has been trained to instantly find your facial features (eyes, nose, mouth) in real-time. This allows it to "stick" glasses or dog ears to your face, or to separate you from the background and make it blurry.
Predictive Text & Autocorrect
Example: Your phone's keyboard suggesting the next word as you type.
How ML is Used: The model has been trained on billions of sentences to learn which words usually follow each other. It's not just correcting spelling; it's predicting your entire thought to help you type faster.
Google Photos Search
Example: Opening Google Photos and searching for "dog," "beach," or "birthday" and instantly finding all your pictures of those things.
How ML is Used: You never had to label those photos. The AI was trained on millions of images and learned what a dog, a beach, and a birthday cake look like. It "sees" the content of your photos and makes them searchable.
We are going to teach the computer to recognize images without any code.
You are going to create a project using the webcam to teach the computer to recognize AT LEAST two different things.
Here are some ideas, or choose your own! Be creative. =)
